Last week saw the first Tech London Advocates event in New York. To coincide with the Mayor of London’s tech trade mission to the East Coast, Russ Shaw and Innovate Finance’s Claire Cockerton hosted New York: Global Technology Success.

120 Overseas Advocates, Innovate Finance members, British tech entrepreneurs and New York businesses came together to explore the relationship between the digital sectors in London and New York.

A prestigious array of speakers provided their insights into the opportunities and challenges facing both cities. Particular focus was given to the emerging FinTech industry.

Six members of Boris Johnson’s London Tech Ambassadors – Gerard Grech, Tech City UK; Derek White, Barclays; Eileen Burbidge, Passion Capital; Gavin Poole, Here East along with Russ Shaw and Claire Cockerton, set the context for the event in the opening panel. Representing London’s leading tech influencers and experts, the panel presented London’s recent tech growth and outlined the capital’s key areas of strength for the US audience.

An Innovate Finance panel included speakers such as Alastair Peterson, Digital Shadows and Adam Kaufman, Seedrs – representing some of the leading FinTech experts on both sides of the Atlantic.

Prominent New York digital experts such as Tarek Pertew, Uncubed; Jon Soberg, Expansive Ventures; Trevor Johnson, Facebook and Michael Lopez, New York Technology Council, discussed the future of the city’s tech sector – examining issues around talent, funding and government support.

Russ Shaw accompanied the Mayor of London throughout the tech trade mission, meeting local business leaders and tech experts in Boston and New York to encourage greater collaboration between the British and US digital industries.
